Welcome to slayer’s blog | Web Design tips & tutorials

Well it’s not that significant. I “upgraded” my WIndows XP SP 2 with vista patches and all sorts of vista styling addons to Windows XP SP 2 with a classic view. If you continue to read on you will find out why.

The shiny one is the old windows and the regular one is the freshly installed windows.

“Upgrading” from a newer version to an older version reminds me of Nero 5. About 3 years ago when i worked at the pc shop we went in service to a medical firm where i had to make backups of the databases.

We took a CD writer with along with data cables and an original Nero 5.5(i think) CD so i can burn the stuff. I burned 4 databases from 4 PC’s and moved on to the 5th where nero 6.x was installed(which of course i didn’t notice only when Nero 5.5 installer started).

A notification message popped up saying:“Do you want to upgrade nero 6.x to nero 5.5?”. I was like wtf? The older versions of Nero were a bit dumb, but the good thing is that starting from 6.x versions nero got a lot better.

I reinstalled windows because all those patches messed up my pc(i must have been drunk when i installed them lol) everything was shiny and beautiful but my pc worked like crap.

An other thing that was annoying was that the theme used styler(simmilar to ThemeXP) after which i had to wait like 2 minutes to load on every startup. Trust me, when your in a hurry things like this can really piss you off.

At first i really enjoyed it but when i started having issues with photoshop(slow rendering times, slow save time) i decided that something must be done.

I wanted to reinstall last week but than when the new windows setup got to “Setup is loading windows” i got the blue screen of death. At that time i didn’t have time to reboot and put it in again, because i had to rush down to a friend.

Today I got the blue screen of death 2 times before i realized that most possibly the old windows is affecting the new installation. At that point i pressed the reboot button, put in the bootcd, loaded Partition Magic Pro and formated drive C.

I rebooted the pc again, put in the windows XP cd and guess what everything went as smoothly as possible!

I chose the classic look because all that gloss pissed me off, and i’m pretty tired of the default color themes @ windows xp + this one doesn’t eat that much memory(when you have 512 RAM and do advanced projects in Photoshop every MB of RAM counts!)

And no, i’m not old fashioned, but as I mentioned in a previous post I rather stick with Windows XP than to switch to vista.

If you don’t want to use a RAM hungry theme program, do what I do and just use a hacked UXTheme.dll ( http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=140707 ), and a copy of Luna Element ( http://tornado5.deviantart.com/art/Luna-Element-v5-1-Blue-47567543 ) - quick PC, but no over the top gloss…
